The first mixed media piece that I ever did was the oranges with the orange juicer. It started as a small watercolor study. I was coming up with an assignment for my Advanced Placement Studio Art students to teach them about the principles of unity and variety. As a demonstration, I took my watercolor study and collaged lots of scraps of colors to the painting, demonstrating variety. Next, I added paint on top of the collage elements to pull things back together and create harmony. I enjoyed doing it so much that the assignment I created for my students became an assignment for me!
